Situated south-west of the Coromandel Range and Peninsula are the contrasting fertile plains of the Waikato, synonymous with diary farming, and the rugged steep hills and ridges of the King Country -- home to some extraordinary limestone caves. The Waitomo Caves have been a popular attraction for over a century, paricularly for their glow-worms and impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
