In contrast to Fiordland, much of Southland consists of flat, intensely farmed land far more suited to human habitation. However the Catlins, a coastal area shared between Southland and Otago, have largely escaped settlement. Native forests have rejuvenated from milling in pioneering days, slowly drawing people to this scenic and untouched backwater.
Southland is also known for having the best coastal walk at the most impressive coast in New Zealand, Abel Tasman National Park's ravishing beauty with the crystal clear water Nelson, is a haven for kayaking. You can get close to the penguins, dolphins and even the gulls.
